After much speculation regarding his future, Sheffield Wednesday star Josh Windass will remain at Hillsborough for at least one more year.

The Owls triggered an option in his contract to keep him at the club this summer, an important move to secure the future of one of their best talents.

Windass’ future was a constant topic of conversation throughout the season, after it was reported by GIVEMESPORT's Tom Bogert that Brazilian side Santos were interested in the attacker.

Football League World’s Sheffield Wednesday fan pundit, Patrick McKenna, wasn’t surprised to see Windass extend his deal, but has grown tired of the 31-year-old’s antics throughout the season.

“Didn’t benefit anyone” – Verdict given on Josh Windass’ Sheffield Wednesday extension

“I can't say I am surprised that his contract has been extended by a year,” stated Patrick. “I don't think I've seen a Wednesday player like Windass, in that he seems to create his own transfer rumours and his own news.

“It's not the first time he has hinted that he will be going elsewhere or that he feels his time at Wednesday is up. We've heard several rumours that he is going to the States, he going to Santos, and nothing comes of it.

“The fact that he was on social media and his dad was at it as well, hinting that his time is coming to an end, there's no real need for it. He makes a rod for his own back with the supporters. Some fans do get frustrated with that constant drama he seems to initiate.

“If he is unhappy at the club, that's fine, but the fact that he was coming out saying what he did really didn't benefit anyone. In terms of the club activating the contract, Windass had his best season for Wednesday last season in terms of goals and assists. He was key to us last season , and it's obvious that we felt that he is an asset we want to keep hold of.

“If I had the choice as Wednesday manager, I would have kept him as well. Of course, in the summer, there is nothing to stop clubs coming in and bidding for him. He may well go still, but from a football decision point of view, I think it's a sensible one and it was always going to happen.

“I can't say I'm surprised, but I don't think it's going to be the end of rumours around Windass’ future.”

A crucial move for Wednesday ahead of an uncertain summer

The upcoming summer window promises to be one of intrigue and mystery for Sheffield Wednesday, with the Owls still waiting for confirmation of Danny Rohl’s departure.

Senior stars within the dressing room may not be happy to lose such a promising manager and could in turn up tools and leave, however, Windass’ contract extension looks to have been something of a vote of confidence from the attacker.

Alongside Windass, the contracts of Barry Bannan and Anthony Musaba were also extended, which leaves the Owls’ squad looking in a much healthier place then many assumed it may be.

His creative output would be tough to replace and in a time of such uncertainty, it is crucial Wednesday keep some familiar elements in the core of the squad.

The club confirmed the departure of seven players following the expiration of their contracts, including Stuart Armstrong, Ben Hamer, Ryo Hatsuse, Michael Ihiekwe, Marvin Johnson, Pol Valentin, and Mallik Wilks.

Therefore, Wednesday's retention of key performers like Bannan and Windass signals the club's intent to build on the foundations of this season's squad while allowing room for summer recruitment to strengthen in areas vacated by departing players.

Although his attitude may be questioned, his ability cannot, and no matter what way you look at it – keeping Josh Windass was an important move from Sheffield Wednesday, that could have massive ramifications for their performance next season.
