Claude Le Roy has criticised Donald Trump’s stance towards Africa and floated the idea of a boycott of the 2026 World Cup.
“I wonder whether we should call for a boycott of the 2026 World Cup, in the United States, Canada and Mexico from 11 June to 19 July, given Donald Trump’s behaviour towards the continent, with a FIFA president, Gianni Infantino, who prides himself on being at his side,” he told Le Figaro.
Le Roy worked as a pundit for Canal+Afrique at Sunday’s Africa Cup of Nations final, where Senegal beat Morocco 1-0 after extra time, and was seen on the touchline advising Sadio Mané during the interruption. The 77-year-old managed Senegal from 1988 to 1992.
“He is damaging Africa by killing all the NGOs. That is the tragedy of this continent.”
“Those at the highest level of football no longer talk about football, only about money.”
“I attended the CAF press conference, I wanted to speak several times, I was never given a microphone because everyone knew I would probably not be accommodating. My fight is not finished on this.”
