FC Bayern have established a strong starting position at Real Madrid – but one scene is causing heated debate. The focus: Michael Olise and a duel in stoppage time. Were the Munich team denied a clear penalty?

Bayern won the Champions League quarter-final first leg 2:1 at the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu and impressed for a long time with a controlled performance. Goals from Luis Díaz and Harry Kane gave the record champions the lead before Real reduced the deficit through Kylian Mbappé and made the final phase even more exciting.

One scene in particular came to the fore in these final minutes. In stoppage time, Michael Olise took the ball in the penalty area when he was pushed from behind by Álvaro Carreras. The referee allowed play to continue and judged the action to be a normal physical challenge, a decision that immediately sparked debate.

Reactions were particularly heated on social media, with numerous users on X seeing the action as a clear foul and vehemently demanding a penalty for Munich. One post summed up the mood: „THIS IS SURELY A PENALTY? Carreras literally pushed Olise from his back.“

Bayern were repeatedly disadvantaged against Real

While Olise tried to control the ball, the contact clearly came from behind, but the referee’s whistle remained silent – a decision that denied Bayern a potential late goal.

Time and again, there have been controversial scenes in duels between FC Bayern and Real Madrid to the detriment of Munich. The 2017 Champions League duel in particular will be remembered by many, when several controversial decisions – including offside goals and sending-offs – caused great debate and Bayern were ultimately eliminated. Two years ago, there were also several controversial scenes against Munich in the CL semi-final between the two teams.

This time, too, a scene that could have influenced the course of the game took center stage. Despite the discussions, FC Bayern held on for a narrow away win to put themselves in a good position for the second leg in Munich.
