Clemens Fritz has confirmed Werder Bremen tried, unsuccessfully, to bring Niclas Füllkrug back during the winter window.

“We wanted to bring Niclas Füllkrug back. I spoke to him two or three times when he was at West Ham United. But we knew that, from an economic perspective, our chances were very slim,” he told Sport Bild.

Füllkrug left West Ham in January to join AC Milan on loan. The 33-year-old forward had other admirers and was also linked with a return to Bremen.

Werder sought attacking cover after Bayer Leverkusen loanee Victor Boniface suffered a long-term injury. “The financial risk for us with this loan was absolutely manageable. In retrospect – we have to be self-critical – the plan with Victor didn’t work out,” Fritz admitted.

Ultimately, the Bundesliga side moved to bolster their frontline by signing Jovan Milosevic on loan from Stuttgart during the winter transfer window.
