Clément Lenglet is closing in on a move to Benfica, a deal that could add experience and quality in the build-up phase. According to Glorioso 1904, the 31-year-old French international has emerged as a leading candidate to organise Marco Silva’s defence.
Benfica are shaping their squad for the new season with Silva already at the helm in Seixal, and their work is far from finished. Market moves continue as they seek reinforcements.
Rui Costa told the last general assembly that the club would recruit an experienced centre-back to bring immediate stability to the back line. Lenglet fits that brief.
He came through at Nancy, impressed at Sevilla, then joined Barcelona in 2018 for about 40 million euros. That marked the high point of his career, though he never became an undisputed starter.
Subsequently he featured for Tottenham, Aston Villa and Atlético Madrid, adding Premier League and La Liga experience. Last season with Atlético he played 24 official matches and registered one assist.
A left-footed centre-back, Lenglet offers strong build-up play and reading of the game, which could aid Silva’s approach. Weaknesses in aerial duels, aggression and pace raise questions over his immediate impact at the Luz.
