The goalkeepers of African clubs failed to shine during the 2025 Club World Cup.
Aside from a few moments of brilliance by Mohamed El Shenawy (Al Ahly) against Inter Miami and Bechir Ben Said (Espérance de Tunis) facing Los Angeles, the overall performance of African keepers was largely mediocre.
In fact, none of them made the list of the tournament's top 18 goalkeepers, according to statistics from the specialist site Sofascore.
The highest-ranked African goalkeeper was Mohamed El Shenawy, who received a rating of 6.83 after conceding six goals with Al Ahly during the tournament.
Meanwhile, Bechir Ben Said landed in 21st place with a score of 6.67. The Espérance de Tunis shot-stopper let in five goals at the Club World Cup.
El Mehdi Benabid, guardian of Wydad’s net, finished in 24th place with an average of 6.5, having conceded eight goals during the competition.
Ronwen Williams, Mamelodi Sundowns' keeper, was ranked 29th. He had a tough outing in the 4-3 loss to Borussia Dortmund.
