Manchester United find themselves in a promising financial position as they head into the summer transfer window, having secured qualification for next season’s Champions League.
INEOS spent approximately £200 million last summer despite the absence of European football. As such, it would not surprise many if United go even further this time in their bid to strengthen Michael Carrick’s side.
The contrasting fortunes of their fierce rivals may also boost the Red Devils’ rebuild.
Chelsea recorded an embarrassing 10th-place finish in the Premier League, failing to qualify for any European competition.
The Blues now find themselves in a financial predicament and could be forced to consider selling their star players, especially if they want to bring in Xabi Alonso‘s preferred targets to Stamford Bridge.
According to The Sun, only Moises Caicedo is considered “untouchable” at Chelsea, raising questions over the future of Cole Palmer.
It is claimed that £80 million would be “a starting point for negotiations to buy” the Chelsea number 10.
Palmer, who was born in Wythenshawe and is a boyhood United fan, has frequently been linked with a return to Manchester.
Earlier this month, The Daily Mail claimed that “there remain sources outside of Chelsea who continue to claim he would consider such a move privately.”
However, United’s stance on making a move for the 24-year-old Chelsea talisman this summer remains unclear, with the club focused on renewing Bruno Fernandes’ contract.
Chelsea, meanwhile, have set their sights on United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo.
The London outfit tried to sign Mainoo last summer after seeing him struggle for minutes under Ruben Amorim. However, the United academy gem had no desire to leave the club permanently.
Alonso now wants to test his resolve, but given how Mainoo has thrived under Carrick, it would be a massive waste of time for Chelsea if they decide to make a move for the United midfielder.
