For any Manchester United fan, the prospect of losing Kobbie Mainoo – whatever the price – is unthinkable.

Yet, it’s a possibility that the Old Trafford faithful may be forced into accepting if recent reports are anything to go by.

The most reliable comes via David Ornstein (The Athletic), as he revealed last night that United would ‘reluctantly consider’ offers for Mainoo and his fellow up-and-coming teammate Alejandro Garnacho in order to stay within the league’s financial constraints.

Prior to that, Chris Wheeler claimed the 19-year-old midfielder was demanding around £200,000 per week to sign a new deal with the club – despite already being tied down until 2027 plus the option of an additional year, which you’d expect United would exercise.

He added that in the event Mainoo was made available, Chelsea would be first in line to prise him from M16 and add him to their ranks.

It’s a notion that Cole Palmer can seemingly get on board with, too, as he liked an edited picture of his compatriot wearing a Blues shirt on Instagram, with the caption detailing Chelsea’s newly revealed interest.

At the moment, it all seems a bit far-fetched. Selling Mainoo of all the members in the squad would surely be a last resort for INEOS, and there’s no doubt Ruben Amorim would make it clear to them behind the scenes that he’s the type of player he’ll build his team around.

In line with that, you can’t begrudge Mainoo expecting his pay to accurately reflect the integral role he plays – but without taking the mick, of course.

He’ll be looking at the likes of Casemiro (£350,000 per week), Christian Eriksen (£150,000), and Mason Mount (£250,000), all pocketing significantly more than his £20,000-a-week wages (Capology), knowing that his performances compared to his senior counterparts have been worlds apart over the last season and a half.

Reports like this shouldn’t really be publicised for fans to speculate over, though you’d have to question whether it’s being fuelled by agents or those behind the scenes at United.
