Colombia return to the FIFA World Cup this summer after missing the Qatar 2022 finals.

James Rodríguez and Luis Díaz lead Néstor Lorenzo’s renewed project. Los Cafeteros sealed their place by finishing third in CONMEBOL qualifying with 28 points. They edged Uruguay and Brazil on goal difference.

Argentine coach Lorenzo announced his final 26-man squad in late May. Captain Rodríguez leads the side at 34, eight years removed from his star turn at Brazil 2014. The Minnesota United midfielder finished as top scorer at that tournament. He departed his MLS club on 13 May to begin tournament preparations.

Luis Díaz arrives in arguably the form of his career, having moved from Liverpool to Bayern Munich last summer. The winger lifted the Bundesliga in his maiden campaign in Germany. Díaz leads Colombia with 21 international goals from 72 appearances.

Veteran goalkeeper David Ospina travels to a third World Cup, marshalling the back line. Crystal Palace duo Daniel Muñoz and Jefferson Lerma anchor the right flank and midfield, respectively. Galatasaray’s Davinson Sánchez and Bologna’s Jhon Lucumí form a settled centre-back pairing, with Yerry Mina providing experienced cover.

The painful memory of Copa América 2024 still lingers. Lorenzo’s side lost the final 1-0 to Argentina in Miami after extra time. Two newer faces catch the eye: Benfica midfielder Richard Ríos and Krasnodar forward Jhon Córdoba. Veterans Juan Cuadrado, Rafael Santos Borré and Sebastián Villa miss the cut.

Group K pits Los Cafeteros against tournament debutants Uzbekistan, DR Congo and Portugal. The closing fixture against Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal in Miami could decide the group winners.
