With that being said, the Crew has signed a former Atlanta United free agent to fill the spot left by Cheberko, and improve in the second part of the regular season.

Columbus Crew signs free agent defender Brooks Lennon

According to the Columbus Crew's official website, the team has signed Brooks Lennon via MLS Free Agency through June 2027, with Club options for the 2027-28 and 2028-29 seasons. Lennon is a well-known MLS veteran who spent nine seasons in the league.

After three seasons with Real Salt Lake, Lennon spent the next six years establishing himself as a key contributor for Atlanta United. The Crew’s general manager had nothing but praise for his new acquisition.

“Brooks is a proven MLS player whose versatility and skillset are a good complement to our roster,” adding, “He is a hard-working player whose professionalism and ability to impact the game in multiple ways will provide important depth and competition within our group heading into the remainder of the season.”

During his time with the Five Stripes, Lennon played 171 games (starting in 153), scoring nine goals and providing 37 assists.

Lennon ranks second all-time in assists for Atlanta United, further highlighting his significant impact during his tenure with the club.

The 28-year-old defender earned a cap with the USMNT in 2021, underscoring Columbus Crew’s acquisition of a proven player with international experience.

For a team searching to get back to the top of the Eastern Conference, Lennon is a great addition and the best replacement for Cheberko.
