Columbus Crew sign former Real Sociedad star as their new designated player | OneFootball

If we talk about the MLS transfer market, we cannot leave out the Columbus Crew, who have been doing their homework and strengthening their squad for the second half of the regular season.

Sitting in 10th place and outside the playoff spots, the Crew made improving its defense a priority during this break.

For that reason, the club exercised its purchase option on Andrés Herrera from River Plate and signed veteran Brooks Lennon, formerly of Atlanta United.

According to the Crew’s official website, the Columbus Crew have acquired Brais Méndez as a Designated Player from La Liga’s Real Sociedad. His contract runs through the 2028-29 season with a Club option for the 2029-30 campaign.

This transfer is crucial for Columbus because, since Cucho Hernández's departure, the team has not found offensive consistency. That does not mean Méndez will become a superstar overnight, but he will help make sure more of Columbus' attacks end in goals.

Columbus Crew General Manager, Issa Tall, said: “The addition of Brais gives our team another talented player for the short- and long-term, and we look forward to his arrival as we look to push during the second part of our season.”

The Celta de Vigo prospect arrives at the Black & Gold after spending nearly a decade in Spain. With Real Sociedad, Méndez won the Copa del Rey after defeating Atlético de Madrid, yes, in Antoine Griezmann's last final before joining Orlando City.

During his time with La Real, Méndez played 166 matches, recording 33 goals and providing 24 assists.
