FC Bayern sold nine players last summer or gave them away on a free transfer. While some are fighting for titles with their clubs, others are hardly getting any playing time
Mathys Tel, Kingsley Coman, Paul Wanner, Adam Aznou, Frans Krätzig, Gabriel Vidovic, Leroy Sané, Eric Dier and Thomas Müller – these are all players that FC Bayern sold permanently last summer. Their developments could not be more different
Mathys Tel was Bayern’s top departure this year. Tottenham Hotspur put a whole 35 million euros on the table for the young Frenchman. However, he has yet to really make his mark in London. Although he has appeared in eleven Premier League games so far, he has only started in two of them, scoring two goals in a total of 277 minutes. It looks like a real improvement on his Bayern situation, especially as Tel was only allowed to play for just over half an hour against Slavia Prague in the Champions League

The second most expensive sale of the last transfer window was Kingsley Coman. Al-Nassr paid FCB a whopping €25 million for the 29-year-old winger, an investment that certainly paid off: Coman started eight out of nine games in the Saudi Pro League, scoring three goals and providing five assists. The Frenchman has also impressed in the AFC Champions League, most recently scoring twice in the group game against Al-Zawraa SC on Christmas Eve
Paul Wanner has had less success with his new employer so far. After moving to PSV Eindhoven for €15 million, he has only made seven appearances in the Eredivisie, twice playing the full 90 minutes. Wanner has also only made brief appearances in the Champions League. In a total of twelve competitive matches for the Dutch league leaders, Wanner has only scored once – in the cup against third division side Veenendaal

Aznou left Bayern in the summer for around nine million euros to join Everton FC, where he played an even smaller role than Wanner did in Eindhoven – none at all. Although he was in the squad for every Premier League game for the Toffees apart from the first three, the young Moroccan has yet to make an appearance. He only made three appearances in the EFL Trophy and League Cup, and that was in the starting eleven. However, all three games were lost
RB Salzburg paid just €3.5 million for the services of Frans Krätzig in the summer. In view of the 15 competitive games he has played so far, you could almost call it a bargain, especially as the 21-year-old has already made two assists. After a bumpy start, Krätzig has become a regular in the Austrian Bundesliga. He has played over 90 minutes in each of the last three league games, although he has only made two appearances in the Europa League

Gabriel Vidovic’s return to Dinamo Zagreb has not quite gone to plan so far. While he was always allowed to start in the first six league games, the picture has changed in the meantime. Due to his low tally of just one goal and one assist, Vidovic has only been part of the first eleven in one game since then. He has even had to sit on the bench eight times. Vidovic has hardly got any playing time in the Europa League either, collecting just 52 minutes in four appearances
Leroy Sané left FC Bayern for Galatasaray Istanbul on a free transfer amid great turmoil. After initial teething troubles, however, he is now impressing at the Turkish top club. After 23 competitive matches, the 29-year-old has scored six goals and provided six assists, which means he has shot his way back into the DFB squad. Coach Okan Buruk has started Sané in 16 of 17 league matches, mostly without making a substitution. The winger has scored a strong five goals in his last four appearances
Things are going even better for Bayern legend Thomas Müller, who has decided to spend the autumn of his career with the Vancouver Whitecaps in the MLS. He has already become an absolute cult figure there thanks to his incomparable style, but the Bavarian also knows how to impress in sporting terms. As captain of the Canadians, he scored nine goals and four assists in 13 MLS games (including play-offs), starting a run that only ended with the final defeat to Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami

Eric Dier has also captained AS Monaco, but only twice. After six 90-minute games, the Englishman suffered a thigh injury and later injured his calf, meaning he hasn’t played a game since the beginning of October. Before his injuries, however, the centre-back played almost every single minute, missing just one league game. Even disregarding his injuries, he can be considered a successful transfer
In view of the performances of some of the players, the question inevitably arises as to whether Bayern should have kept some of their departures. Given the almost non-existent playing time of Adam Aznous, one might think that he could have collected more of it at Bayern – especially as Alphonso Davies was absent through injury until recently. However, it can be said across the board that the Bayern bosses have not made any major sporting losses with their departures
In particular, Mathys Tel, whose 35 million euros were crucial in ensuring that FCB left the transfer window this summer with a plus of over 10 million euros, is currently being missed little or not at all in sporting terms. The same applies to Kingsley Coman, Leroy Sané and Thomas Müller, who would hardly have made any sporting impact at the moment anyway. Overall, the bosses can therefore be congratulated on making good sales.
