The 2026 FIFA World Cup is starting to hit full flow and Spain will finally kick off their campaign today with a game against Cape Verde in Atlanta, Georgia, USA.

Ahead of the Group H encounter, La Roja boss Luis de la Fuente has announced the starting XI that will take the field at the Atlanta Stadium.

And, as expected, new Real Madrid signing Marc Cucurella starts for Spain at left-back.

The Merengues announced the signing of the 27-year-old defender only earlier today, with the player arriving in a deal worth €55 million plus €5 million in add-ons. He has signed a six-year contract at the club that runs until 2032.

A mainstay for the Spanish national team under De la Fuente, Cucurella will have an important role to play if the 2010 world champions are to go all the way in the tournament.

This will also be a welcome development for Real Madrid, who did not have a single player in the Spain World Cup squad when the list was initially announced by the manager.

It was the first time in the club’s history that a player from the team was not in the Spain squad for a World Cup.

With Cucurella’s signing, that issue has now been addressed and the left-back is all set to start in the nation’s first game at the World Cup.
