Flamengo have been awarded a 3-0 win and three points for the Libertadores group match at Independiente Medellín that was cancelled. The federation announced the walkover against the Colombian club on Thursday.
The ruling lifts Flamengo to 13 points and secures first in Group A. They had already reached the round of 16 after beating Estudiantes 1-0 at the Maracanã. Their final group game is on Tuesday at home to eliminated Cusco, while Independiente Medellín face Estudiantes for second.
As the home side, Independiente Medellín were held responsible for the security failings that caused the cancellation. They were hit with five home matches behind closed doors in Conmebol competitions, two away fixtures without their supporters, and a fine of US$116,000, R$582,000.
Article 24.2 of the Conmebol Disciplinary Code states that when a team is responsible for definitive suspension, cancellation or abandonment, the final score is set as a walkover, with the opponent declared a 3-0 winner.
Medellín are in a turbulent spell and home fans staged protests before kick-off. Some arrived in black with faces covered and threw explosives and flares towards the pitch. There was a small fire in the Atanasio Girardot stands.
Barriers were placed around the pitch and some home fans invaded, hurling them. Both teams left on the referee’s instruction with a little over five minutes played. The 45 minute waiting period was exceeded, the match was halted, fans were asked to leave, then more than an hour after the scheduled start it was cancelled.
