Conmebol cancelled Flamengo’s Copa Libertadores match at Independiente Medellín after serious crowd disorder early on. The club said in a statement that it would not alter its schedule.

The trouble began in the opening minutes when home supporters threw bombs, set fires in the stands and tried to invade the pitch at the Atanasio Girardot Stadium. The game was halted, players returned to the dressing rooms, then after lengthy talks with security officials the fixture was called off.

The itinerary had been set since leaving Rio de Janeiro on Tuesday.

The delegation left the Atanasio Girardot Stadium to dine in Medellín, then board a flight to Porto Alegre, with arrival expected on Friday morning.

In Porto Alegre, Flamengo will face Grêmio on Sunday in the Brasileirão at Arena do Grêmio, with kick-off at 19:30 Brasília time.
