Conmebol has imposed a 60-day provisional sanction on Independiente Medellín, forcing them to play without supporters at home and away after disorder halted their Libertadores match with Flamengo last Thursday.
Flamengo have already asked to be awarded the points, ESPN first reported.
Only one minute was played at the Atanasio Girardot as home fans, protesting against the club’s board, threw flares onto the pitch. There was also a pitch invasion, putting players and other supporters at risk.
Conmebol has opened disciplinary proceedings. Independiente Medellín are the named party, and Flamengo are also due to submit observations. Both sides have until 19 May to present arguments, with any decision to follow after that date.
The provisional ban is grounded in article 53 of Conmebol’s disciplinary code, which allows the organisation’s legal head to take interim steps to protect procedural order, the integrity of the process and the effectiveness of any eventual ruling, without first hearing the parties.
The measure can be extended for a further 30 days if required.
