Conmebol has opened a disciplinary case against Palmeiras head coach Abel Ferreira after a gesture during the celebration of the opening goal in a 2-0 win over Sporting Cristal in Lima in the Copa Libertadores.
On the night, he raised a middle finger towards Palmeiras forward Flaco López, which he acknowledged in his post-match interview on Tuesday, explaining it was aimed at a player he pushes hardest.
He has been cited under Article 11, items B and C, of Conmebol’s Disciplinary Code covering principles of conduct. Possible sanctions include a warning, a reprimand and a fine from 100 dollars.
Palmeiras will submit a defence. It is the second disciplinary procedure involving Abel in 2026, after a formal caution in April for breaches of Article 11.2, letters D and F, relating to criticism of VAR.
He had referred to a Conmebol VAR that did not work in relation to the 2025 Libertadores final, when officials were not called to review a possible red card for Erick Pulgar. After the caution he said he would change how he handled interviews, then declined to discuss a question about Cerro Porteño shortening the pitch for a 1-1 draw.
