Conmebol released the VAR audio after Boca’s 1-1 draw with Cruzeiro in the Copa Libertadores on Tuesday. The match featured late controversies that were clarified in the recordings.
On 90 minutes, Uruguayan forward Miguel Merentiel had a potential winner ruled out for a prior handball by midfielder Milton Delgado. The federation said Delgado blocked the ball with an arm in an unnatural position, occupying space, so a punishable handball was committed.
Soon after, Boca appealed for a penalty when the ball hit Cruzeiro’s Argentine midfielder Lucas Romero inside the box. The referee was not called to the monitor.
In the audio, officials judged Romero’s arm to be in a natural position and indicated he was trying to withdraw it, so no offence was given. The incident in the area was confirmed as fully checked.
The draw complicated Boca’s group position. They could finish the round third in Group D and would head into their final fixture needing to beat Universidad Católica de Chile.
