Conmebol seeks clarifications over FIFA plan to sell World Cup shares to private investors | OneFootball

Conmebol has asked FIFA to clarify its plan to create a commercial company open to private investment. The South American confederation said in a statement on Friday that it wants more detail before taking a stance.

It requested further information on the project's scope, structure, governance and potential impacts. It also urged unity across the football community and said the game must come before any other interest.

Conmebol, which comprises 10 member associations, recognises that developing football requires commercial and financial decisions, but insisted those choices should serve the sport and never supersede its essence.

The appeal comes a day after UEFA threatened to boycott future World Cups if stakes are sold to private investors. Opposition widened on Friday when the Asian Football Confederation backed the positions of UEFA and Concacaf.

Conmebol, whose president Alejandro Dominguez is generally seen as an ally of FIFA president Gianni Infantino, had not previously set out a position on the plan.

Under a note headed First, football, Conmebol has taken note of FIFA's proposal for the FFE project, begun consultations with its members and convened a Council meeting. It will continue to act with prudence, responsibility and a collaborative spirit, working through institutional channels and principles of good governance.
