CONMEBOL has formally warned Palmeiras head coach Abel Ferreira over comments about VAR following their 1-1 draw with Junior Barranquilla in the Libertadores opener on 8 April.
The Colombian side’s goal came from a penalty conceded by Mauricio, prompting Ferreira to recall the VAR controversy from the 2025 final.
He said Mauricio tried to pull his foot away but there was contact, and argued that VAR seems to be working this year, unlike last season when he said it did not. He added that there was a touch.
In a published decision, the disciplinary body reprimanded him for breaching Article 11.2, points d and f, and stated that any repeat during the 2026 Libertadores would bring sanctions under the Manual. It also noted that further similar offences would trigger Article 27, and that the case is closed after due process with no right of appeal.
The cited clauses cover insulting CONMEBOL or its authorities and officials, and behaviour that could discredit football and the confederation.
