Corinthians aim for best derby record since 2019 to end season on a high

Corinthians faces São Paulo this Thursday night (20th), at 7:30 PM (Brasília time), at the Neo Química Arena, in a match valid for the 34th round of the Brazilian Championship. The Paulista Alvinegro arrives at the Majestic with the possibility of securing the year with the best performance in derbies since 2019.

In 2025, Corinthians played 13 derbies, achieving six wins, three draws, and four losses, with a performance rate of 53.8% so far. A victory at the Majestic this Thursday would leave Timão with a 57.1% performance rate in derbies for the season, while a draw would result in a 52.3% rate.

Both numbers would give the Paulista Alvinegro its best performance in derbies since the 2019 season, when the team maintained 51.2% of the points gained against rivals. That year, there were five wins, five draws, and three losses.

After that season, Corinthians' best performance in derbies was precisely the following year, in 2020. Despite having the schedule affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, Timão still played nine games against its historical rivals, winning three times, drawing four times, and losing twice, achieving a 48.1% performance rate.

To consolidate the good derby statistics in 2025, Corinthians will have to overcome the only rival it hasn't beaten this year. There were two games against the rival and two losses, scoring only one goal and conceding five.

Despite having São Paulo as a historical customer, the record of confrontations from 2020 onwards is not favorable to the club from Parque São Jorge. The last time Corinthians beat the rival was on July 25, 2023, when Renato Augusto scored both Corinthians goals in the 2-1 victory in Itaquera, in the first leg of the Copa do Brasil semifinals.

Since then, there have been seven matches (Brasileirão, Copa do Brasil, and Campeonato Paulista), with six São Paulo victories and one draw. Considering only games in the Brazilian Championship, Corinthians hasn't beaten the rival since December 2020, when they defeated the Morumbi team 1-0 in Itaquera, in the second round of that year's tournament, with a goal by midfielder Otero. Subsequently, there have been nine matches between the two in the competition, with five defeats and four São Paulo triumphs.

Moreover, at the Neo Química Arena, Corinthians hasn't beaten São Paulo since July 2023. However, there have only been two matches between the teams at the Corinthians' home during this period – one rival victory and one draw. Since 2014, there have been 20 matches between the two teams in the East Zone, with 11 Alvinegro victories, eight draws, and one loss – 35 goals scored and 19 conceded.

Besides the possibility of consolidating good derby statistics, Timão can also secure a leap in the standings with a victory this Thursday. Depending on the score, a triumph could take Corinthians to the ninth position in the Brasileirão standings, currently occupied by São Paulo.
