Corinthians boss: Yuri Alberto’s error, minutes for Magno, Kayke

Coach Dorival Júnior refrained from criticizing striker Yuri Alberto, who missed a penalty in Corinthians' defeat to Flamengo this Sunday, the 28th, in a match at Neo Química Arena for the 25th round of the Brazilian Championship. According to the alvinegro manager, the player's mistake in the penalty kick was an unfortunate event, which could have happened for various reasons, and does not imply irresponsibility on the part of the player.

“That moment belongs to the athlete. He was trained for this. We have a sequence there. It may be that on the day he is not feeling well. He takes the ball and passes it to the second, to the third. We have up to four players there, numbered, who can take the penalty. But there is no interference. The result is that he was trained. Certainly, it was not like that. We were unfortunate. We have to endure all this.”

Dorival revealed that he spoke with Yuri Alberto during the match. “The first moment he came over, when he came to get some water, something like that, I talked to him. The player knows better than anyone what happened, knows the mistake he made, the wrong decision, so to speak. It's not easy, it's not simple, even more so for those who are in charge,” he said.

The coach continued, recalling that a similar situation had happened recently, when Memphis missed a penalty trying the same kind of kick: “You are totally at a loss, because you don't know what the athlete's reaction will be at that moment. I just regret it because we had a similar incident back in the Mirassol game. That's all, and it should have served as a lesson to all of us,” he stated.

Another attacking player mentioned by Dorival in the post-defeat press conference this Sunday was Talles Magno. He explained why he continues to give playing time to the athlete, who has not been able to contribute to the team's goals recently. For the Corinthians coach, regaining the attacking midfielder's confidence depends precisely on being on the field more.

“A player's confidence, he only gains it by playing. He has been training well, these details catch our attention. You can't go the full 90 minutes needing to improve your team's flow and not take any action. You have to make a change. Someone has to come off, there's no other way.”

On the other hand, Dorival also addressed the lack of opportunities for the young Kayke. “They were circumstantial, they were situations where we imagined a different context for the changes we made. Kayke, he has been getting opportunities, he knows how much I push him in certain situations where we need him to improve a little more. But he has been evolving and is a player I like and who will certainly still be used in this process,” he concluded.
