Fernando Diniz defended André Ramalho after Corinthians’ 3-1 defeat to Botafogo at Nilton Santos in the Brasileiro, insisting the setback was down to collective shortcomings rather than one player.
According to Meu Timao, the coach said Ramalho was not to blame, praised his long European career and importance to the club, and underlined that the defender retains full backing. He cautioned against scapegoating individual mistakes.
Ramalho was involved in the move for Botafogo’s third. After goalkeeper Neto launched long, he duelled with Villalba, who found Kauan, and Arthur Cabral swept in to complete his hat-trick.
Diniz was without Gabriel Paulista through suspension after a third yellow card, so Ramalho partnered Gustavo Henrique at centre-back. João Pedro remains in recovery following surgery to repair an inguinal hernia.
Another option is Iago Machado, 17, who has trained intermittently with the first team since January after impressing in the Copinha. Diniz said he is still getting to know the youngster but sees a promising future.
Born in São Bernardo do Campo, he joined Corinthians in childhood via futsal before settling as a defender in the 11-a-side game. In 2025 he played for the under-17s and finished as the side’s third-highest scorer with nine goals.
He also stood out at last season’s Torneio da Andaluzia, earning improved terms on his return to Brazil. His release clause is R$ 66 million for domestic clubs and 100 million euros abroad, with a contract through 16 April 2028 and Copinha eligibility until 2030.
