According to Meu Timao, Corinthians honoured former captain Alessandro before the 1-1 draw with FC Cascavel on Sunday at Estádio Olímpico Regional.
He was presented with a personalised 2026/27 shirt bearing his name and the number two, the number he wore for the club. The tribute took place in Cascavel as he lives in the region, and he also received a plaque from executive Marcelo Paz and football manager Julio Cesar, his former team-mate.
Alessandro came through Flamengo’s academy and made his senior debut in 2000. He later played for Palmeiras, Dynamo Kyiv in Ukraine, Grêmio and Santos, before joining Corinthians in 2008 during the squad rebuild for Serie B.
He quickly became a starter and helped secure the Serie B title. He went on to embody the team’s resurgence, from the second tier to national, continental and world crowns in four years.
He took the armband in 2011. For Corinthians, he made 259 appearances, recording 134 wins, 80 draws and 45 defeats. His seven trophies were Serie B 2008, Paulistão 2009 and 2013, Copa do Brasil 2009, Brasileiro 2011, Libertadores 2012 and the Club World Cup 2012.
After retiring, he moved into management, becoming football coordinator in 2014 alongside Edu Gaspar. He served as football manager from 2016 to 2018 and again from 2021 to 2023 under Duilio Monteiro Alves. Since then he has stepped away from football and has said in a recent interview that he does not intend to return.
