Corinthians keeper hails teammates after Copa do Brasil win: "We’re in the history books"

In the late afternoon of this Sunday (21), Corinthians visited Vasco at Maracanã Stadium for the second leg of the Copa do Brasil final. In a balanced match, Timão relied on the strength of their attack and, with goals from Yuri Alberto and Memphis, won 2-1, claiming their fourth title in the competition – the previous titles were won in 1995, 2002, and 2009.

Right after the match, goalkeeper Hugo Souza spoke to TV Globo as he left the field. The number 1 for the Alvinegro evaluated Corinthians’ campaign in the competition, recalled the disbelief the team faced throughout the season, and praised all the work put in by his teammates and the coaching staff in winning the title.

“No one believed in us, no one thought we would make it. They said we wouldn’t get past Palmeiras. We did. They said we wouldn’t get past Cruzeiro, but first there was Athletico-PR. We did. After our first game (against Vasco), they said we lost our chance to be champions. They even made champion banners here in Rio de Janeiro.”

He continued. “Our team (played) with a lot of unity, a lot of hard work. We showed that we are really great. And people can say whatever they want, we are in the history books. This squad is in the history books. And I have only one person to thank, and that is Jesus Christ; if it weren’t for Him, we wouldn’t be here. If it weren’t for His mercy. My life wouldn’t be like this. I wouldn’t even be here. And here I am, able to write my name in the history of the club once again,” concluded the goalkeeper.
