Corinthians open talks to appoint Fernando Diniz as head coach | OneFootball

Corinthians have made Fernando Diniz their priority for head coach and want a deal done quickly. According to Meu Timao, the club accept some fans may oppose the move, but see no consensus option in the market.

The board aim to appoint a manager this week, with the Copa Libertadores opener at Platense in Buenos Aires on Thursday, and the intention is for the new coach to be on the touchline.

Talks are under way, and both parties are expected to meet on Monday. Diniz, who lives in São Paulo’s east zone, has been a free agent since February after leaving Vasco da Gama, where he took 56 games for 17 wins, 16 draws and 23 defeats, and finished Copa do Brasil runners-up to Corinthians.

Plan B is Sylvinho, the club’s former boss who most recently led Albania, and he is also due to meet officials on Monday. His previous spell at Corinthians from 2021 to 2022 brought 43 matches, 16 wins, 14 draws and 13 losses, a 48% return.

Tite, the coach who delivered the 2012 Copa Libertadores and Club World Cup, was considered, but he has indicated to people close to him that he may pause his career again for now.

Emiliano Díaz is out of contention. Juan Pablo Vojvoda, with whom Marcelo Paz has worked at Fortaleza, is not a unanimous choice, and the internal view is that his style, now out of work after Santos, does not fit the squad.

Until an appointment is made, Under-20 coach William Batista is interim, leading training on Monday afternoon at CT Dr. Joaquim Grava and preparing the side for the continental tie. The team are on their worst winless run since 2007, increasing the pressure before their push for a second crown in the competition.
