Corinthians pay up, but new worries loom off the pitch

Corinthians have resolved their outstanding wage payments to both players and club staff, with funds transferred on Tuesday, Globo has reported. The salaries, which were due by Monday, had sparked internal concerns as the club grappled with ongoing financial difficulty, but were ultimately settled one day late.

Despite fulfilling fixed salary obligations, Corinthians still owe performance-related bonuses and signing-on fees (“luvas”) to players. The club’s attempt to accelerate future revenue in order to meet June’s payroll was unsuccessful, as avenues for anticipated income had largely been exhausted. Interim president Osmar Stabile had already informed executive director Fabinho Soldado about potential delays, reflecting transparency about the club’s situation.

Players from the senior men’s squad were given the day off on Tuesday following the payment, as the squad prepares to return to competition after a month-long break. Their first match back is set for Sunday evening, when they host RB Bragantino at the Neo Química Arena in the return to Brasileirão action.

July will present its own set of challenges, with Corinthians facing a tightly-packed schedule of six matches over 19 days across domestic competitions. The club’s ability to meet its remaining financial commitments, particularly outstanding bonuses and signing-on fees, may continue to pose questions as they navigate a critical stretch, both on the pitch and behind the scenes.
