Corinthians players united and focused for Paulista basketball final

Last Monday (24th), the Corinthians' Furiosas secured a spot in the final of the São Paulo Women's Basketball Championship by defeating Santo André 94 x 60 at the Wlamir Marques Gymnasium, closing the semifinal series at 2 x 0. The team led by Bruno Guidorizzi will now face Sesi Araraquara in the battle for the state title, in a best-of-five series. The first match is scheduled for November 29th, at 4 PM (Brasília time), in Araraquara.

After the match, three players from the alvinegro squad – Yasmim Gonçalves, Alana Gonçalo, and Thayná Silva – spoke to the portal Meninas do Timão about the moment the team is experiencing, the challenges of the campaign, the internal environment, and the expectations for the final.

Wing Yasmim Gonçalves celebrated the qualification and talked about the symbolism of facing the team from the city where she grew up.

“Ah, the heart gets a little tight, right? I grew up in Santo André, I'm from there, so I did my entire base there, I graduated there, so I have a special affection. But when we wear this jersey, the opponent is just a detail; we want to win. So, I'm very happy with the qualification, another final for the résumé and now a final with these wonderful girls representing a great club. I'm very happy,” said the player, who also highlighted the structure offered by Corinthians:

“Look, I had never played in a club with so much structure, so when I arrived, I was really perplexed by so much. We are not used to it; women's basketball suffers from this. So, I just have to be grateful. I think they give us everything we need to get on the court and give our best. We don't need to worry about anything,” she added.

Point guard Alana Gonçalo emphasized the team's work during the break for the Brazilian National Team, a period when the squad was depleted.

“Congratulations to Santo André, to the girls, for the work they did, to the staff, for getting this far. I know it was a very difficult Paulista for many teams, and they got here, so congratulations. On our part, we worked a lot. There was a break for the National Team, but the girls who stayed here trained very hard, you could see it. I think our bench responded very well in the last game, and in this one too. We could count on practically everyone,” said the number 24, reinforcing the need for adjustments in the team.

“For the next series, we don't know yet who is coming, but regardless, there is a lot for us to work on, both in defense and attack. And I hope everyone is very confident that we will bring this final home.”

Forward-center Thayná Silva, who joined the alvinegro team this year, spoke about her adaptation to the squad.

“I even commented with the girls that I had never worked with Bruno as a coach, I always interacted with him when he was an assistant. As for the athletes, I already knew practically all of them, except the younger ones. Licinara, Bia, Glendinha, Tacinha.”

She also highlighted the welcoming nature of the group and the coaching staff.

“When I got here, I was received in a very welcoming, truly family-like way. I think that represents Corinthians well. In my perception, our group is a family: playing for each other, without vanity, always cooperating. It's a relationship of trust. Even during today's game, I missed some shots and commented that I wasn't going to shoot anymore because the ball wasn't going in, but on the bench, they kept supporting me.”

Regarding the final, Thayná added:

“We have this week to work and put into practice everything we've trained and that Bruno has been asking for. Now we wait for the decision between Campinas and Araraquara. The most important thing is to focus on our game and maintain what we've built. We know that sometimes we fluctuate during matches, whether in scoring or defense, and we need to keep correcting that.“

“I'm very happy to reach the final. We've worked a lot throughout the championship. Since I arrived, after the LBF, I only missed the first two games. This victory is very important. Now it's time to switch gears, rest, and think exclusively about the decision,” she concluded.
