Corinthians stay unbeaten against Grêmio, end hoodoo at the Arena

Corinthians hosted Grêmio at the Neo Química Arena on the afternoon of Sunday, November 2, in a match valid for the 31st round of the Brazilian Championship and ended up winning by a score of 2-0. The goals for the Alvinegro were scored by Gustavo Henrique (defender) and Memphis Depay (forward). The result placed the Corinthians team in ninth position with 42 points.

Additionally, the three points allowed Corinthians to equal the historical record against Grêmio. Now, there are 36 victories for each side and 32 draws – 111 goals scored and 124 conceded. The first match between the two teams took place in December 1947, when the Alvinegro won 1-0 in Rio Grande do Sul, in a friendly match.

In addition, the club from Parque São Jorge broke a taboo of more than a decade without beating Grêmio in official matches at the Neo Química Arena, inaugurated in 2014. The last time had been in November 2014, in the final stretch of that year’s Brazilian Championship, with a goal from striker Paolo Guerrero. Since then, there had been nine draws and one Grêmio victory in Itaquera. In total, there are three wins, nine draws, and one loss against the team from Rio Grande do Sul at home – 13 goals scored and 10 conceded.

Corinthians also maintained an unbeaten streak of almost seven years without losing to Grêmio. The last defeat to the team from Rio Grande do Sul happened on December 2, 2018, by 1-0, in Rio Grande do Sul, in the last round of that year’s Brazilian Championship. Since then, there have been 14 matches – Brasileirão and Copa do Brasil – with four Corinthians wins and 10 draws. In 2018, it is worth noting, the two teams played a friendly at the Arena – during the break for the Russia World Cup, and the Corinthians team won 2-1 – goals: Marquinho Gabriel and Matheus Matias.

In the last 2024 season, Corinthians and Grêmio faced each other four times, with three draws and one Corinthians victory. In the round of 16 of the Copa do Brasil, a goalless draw at the Neo Química Arena and at Couto Pereira. In the penalty shootout, goalkeeper Hugo Souza was decisive and helped the Alvinegro secure a spot in the quarterfinals. In the first round of the Brasileirão, a 2-2 draw. In the last round of the national competition, a resounding 3-0 victory for the club from Parque São Jorge, crowning their surge towards the preliminary phase of the 2025 Libertadores.

This season, there have been only two matches, both in the Brasileirão. In the first round of the Brazilian Championship – 12th round, at the Grêmio Arena – a 1-1 draw, with a goal from midfielder Breno Bidon. This Sunday, a 2-0 Corinthians victory in Itaquera.
