Corinthians to honour Ángel Romero before 2026 Paulista opener

This Sunday (11th), at 4 PM (Brasília time), Corinthians will make its debut in the 2026 season and consequently in the Paulista Championship, hosting Ponte Preta at the Neo Química Arena. Before the match kicks off, the Alvinegro is planning to pay tribute to forward Ángel Romero, who played for the club until the end of last year and did not have his contract renewed.

The information was initially released by ge.globo. Additionally, according to the report, the Neo Química Arena screens should display the best moments of the Paraguayan defending the colors of the Parque São Jorge club. Coincidentally, the farewell will take place on a date with the same number as his jersey at Corinthians (11).

Thus, the Corinthians marketing department plans to highlight the number 11 worn by the athlete during his time at the club. Romero joined Corinthians at the beginning of 2014 and initially did not have many opportunities with Mano Menezes (2014) and Tite (2015).

After the dismantling of the 2015 national champion team, the Paraguayan gained more prominence in the club in 2016, becoming a starter and scoring 15 goals in 56 matches that year. In 2017, amid a Corinthians under suspicion, he was crucial in the tactical and collective aspect in winning the Brasileirão and Paulista Championship that season – six goals in 58 games.

In 2018, he was part of the state champion team against Palmeiras, in penalty shootouts, at Allianz Parque, until he left Parque São Jorge in 2019 after disagreements over his contract renewal. At the beginning of 2023, he returned to the club and was decisive in the final stretch of the Brazilian Championship, becoming one of the main reasons for saving the team from relegation to the national second division. That season, he scored crucial goals against Cuiabá, Grêmio, Vasco da Gama, and Coritiba.

In 2024, even as a 'luxury reserve', he scored 16 goals in 60 games, helping the team's surge in the 2024 Brasileirão (from the Z4 to the Pre-Libertadores). After the departures of Cássio, Fagner, Fábio Santos, Gil, and Paulinho, the Paraguayan became one of the leaders of the squad during 2025, even having lost considerable space after the arrival of Dorival Júnior, who started giving more minutes to young talents from the youth academy like Dieguinho, Gui Negão, and Kayke.

In 2025, he scored five goals (four in the Paulista Championship) and provided three assists in 53 games. His last goal for Corinthians was on April 24, in the victory against Racing-URU, 1-0, at home, in the third round of the Conmebol Sudamericana group stage.

Throughout two spells at Corinthians (2014 to 2018 and 2023 to 2025), he won six titles: Brasileirão (2015 and 2017), Paulista Championship (2017, 2018, and 2025), and Copa do Brasil (2025). In total, he scored 67 goals in 377 matches, being the foreign player with the most goals for the club and the second top scorer at the Neo Química Arena – inaugurated in 2014 – with 43 goals scored.
