Corinthians are planning a tribute to club great Basílio, who turns 77 on Wednesday, before the match against Capivariano at the Arena. ge.globo reports that the club want the celebration to take place before kick-off.
Basílio sealed his place in history by scoring the decisive goal against Ponte Preta at Morumbi in the 1977 state final, ending a 23-year trophy drought. The 77 link has prompted the club to consider the homage.
The outline would see Basílio walk onto the pitch after the warm-up to receive applause from the stands. Further in-stadium actions are being prepared, though the plans have not yet been confirmed.
The format is expected to mirror recent salutes to Renato Augusto in September before Flamengo, to Gil in November ahead of the Majestoso, and to Ángel Romero on opening day against Ponte Preta. On those occasions, former players entered with family, the Fiel applauded, president Osmar Stabile presented a plaque, and the club gifted the third shirt.
São Paulo-born Basílio represented Corinthians from 1975 to 1981, winning the Paulista in 1977 and 1979. He made 253 appearances and scored 29 goals.
