Corinthians unbeaten in knockout ties against Copa do Brasil final rivals

On the eve of the 2025 Copa do Brasil final, Corinthians heads into the clash against Vasco carrying a highly favorable record in knockout encounters between the teams. Throughout history, whenever the clubs have faced each other in elimination matches, Timão has come out on top. Corinthians' advantage spans decades and various competitions.

The first chapter of this record was written in 1930, when Corinthians won the Champion of Champions title by defeating Vasco in the APEA Cup. Since then, whenever the teams have met in decisive knockout clashes, the São Paulo side has advanced. In five elimination encounters throughout history, the Alvinegro Paulista emerged victorious in all, with five wins and four draws in nine matches.

One of the most iconic encounters occurred in 1995, in the Copa do Brasil semifinals. In the first leg at Maracanã, Corinthians won 1-0, a result that already put pressure on the opponent. In the return leg at Pacaembu, Timão showed no mercy to Vasco and delivered a 5-0 thrashing, securing a spot in the final and, later, the tournament title.

Five years later, in 2000, Corinthians and Vasco starred in the most iconic duel between the clubs. In the inaugural edition of the FIFA Club World Cup, the teams faced off in a single-match grand final at Maracanã. Vasco arrived as Libertadores champions, while Timão secured their place as national champions of the host country. Now, 25 years later, the historic stage once again connects the two clubs in a final.

Corinthians' dominance continued in 2006, when the teams met in the preliminary round of the Copa Sudamericana. Over two matches, Corinthians were superior and won the tie with an aggregate score of 4-1, advancing with authority and maintaining their positive record against the Rio club in continental tournaments.

In 2009, the encounter happened again in a national decision, once more in the Copa do Brasil. After a 1-1 draw on aggregate, Corinthians advanced thanks to an away goal scored in the first leg and held the result in the return match. Timão went on to the final and claimed the title over Internacional, which remains, to this day, the club’s last trophy in the competition.

Then in 2012, Corinthians and Vasco faced off in the Libertadores quarterfinals. After a goalless draw at São Januário, Timão won 1-0 at Pacaembu and advanced in the competition. The qualification was marked by Paulinho’s iconic celebration on the fence and was a key part of the unbeaten campaign that culminated in the Libertadores and Club World Cup titles.

Now, in 2025, Corinthians faces Vasco in yet another final, with their overwhelmingly favorable history as the backdrop. The first leg of the Copa do Brasil final takes place this Wednesday (17th), at 9:30 pm, at Neo Química Arena, and Timão will try to keep their positive record to take another step toward a title they haven’t won since 2009.
