A Wolverhampton councillor faces accusations of scaremongering after alleging coins and flares are being thrown at Wolves matches, saying spectators’ safety is at risk.

According to ExpressAndStar.com, Stu Goldsmith, the Reform member for Fallings Park ward, told the council’s regulatory committee last month that hooligans file down 50-pence pieces then hurl them into crowds at Molineux, which he said could cause serious injury or blindness. He also alleged flares are smuggled into the stadium and set off or thrown.

Simon Bennett, leader of the council’s Conservative group, rejected the claims as alarmist and said any evidence should be handed to police. He argued such remarks risk the renewal of the stadium’s safety licence.

Bennett pointed to a Sports Grounds Safety Authority audit in March 2026 that scored the council’s oversight of the stadium 100 out of 100, rated it low risk and praised high safety standards.

He added that councillors should reinforce confidence in local institutions rather than undermine it with unsubstantiated allegations, describing the claims as belonging to another era. Wolves were contacted for comment. Goldsmith declined to comment further.
