A councillor has been accused of scaremongering after warning that lives are at risk from coins and flares at Wolves matches. According to ExpressAndStar.com, Stu Goldsmith’s remarks have triggered a political row in Wolverhampton.
During last month’s Wolverhampton Council regulatory committee, the Reform member for Fallings Park alleged hooligans were filing down 50-pence pieces then hurling them into crowds at Molineux, risking serious injury or blindness. He also claimed flares were being smuggled in and either set off or thrown.
Conservative group leader Simon Bennett rejected the claims as alarmist and said any evidence of crimes should be handed to police.
He pointed to a March 2026 Sports Grounds Safety Authority audit that awarded the council 100 out of 100 for oversight of Molineux, rating it low risk and praising safety management.
Bennett argued that unsubstantiated warnings of danger were irresponsible and could jeopardise renewal of the stadium’s safety licence, adding the claims sounded like something from the 1980s.
Wolves were contacted for comment. Goldsmith declined to comment further.
