Sixty-five people were arrested and six injured, one seriously, after clashes in Paris involving OGC Nice supporters on the eve of the Coupe de France final.
According to Le Progres, around 100 Nice fans gathered at about 23:30 on Thursday in the 10th arrondissement near Canal Saint-Martin, apparently looking for a fight. A large brawl broke out on Quai de Valmy for reasons not yet known.
Police intervened, detaining 65 people, who were placed in custody on suspicion of taking part in a group intent on committing violence. Officers recovered bladed and improvised weapons, along with balaclavas and reinforced gloves.
A bread knife with a 20 cm blade bearing blood traces was also found nearby, and some of the injured were said to be passers-by with no link to supporter culture. Amateur videos showed masked individuals attacking the bar L’Atmosphère, throwing chairs at its frontage.
Nice face Lens in the final at 21:00 on Friday at the Stade de France. The match has been classed as high risk because of hostility between Nice and PSG supporters, with more than 2,000 police deployed, and alcohol sales and public consumption banned in and around the stadium.
