Cristian Romero: Spanish giants fear United could beat them to World Cup winner

There are clear reasons why Manchester United could look to strengthen their central defence this summer.

Victor Lindelof and Jonny Evans both left last summer, and the club never replaced them, a decision that has since come back to haunt United. Injuries have ruthlessly plagued Manchester United’s defensive line throughout the campaign.

Matthijs de Ligt has missed the last four months due to a back injury, Lisandro Martinez has struggled to maintain fitness, and Harry Maguire also initially missed games due to injuries.

It is little wonder, then, that INEOS could look to add a top centre-back this summer, providing an extra defensive option and ensuring they take no chances as United bid to compete on multiple fronts next season.

Romero links

As for which centre-back the Manchester Reds could target, a report from Spain suggests it could be Tottenham Hotspur’s Cristian Romero.

Spurs have endured a wretched season, and whilst they are pushing hard to avoid relegation, even a successful escape is unlikely to secure European football.

Without continental football, retaining top stars like Romero becomes extremely difficult.

Atletico Madrid, notably, are monitoring the Argentina international’s situation closely. Atletico attempted to sign Romero last summer but refused to meet The Lilywhites’ asking price.

The defender then penned a new deal at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, yet crucially, as per Marca, he included a special clause allowing him to join Atletico Madrid or Real Madrid for €60 million (£52m).

United worry Atletico Madrid in their wish to sign Romero

However, as the Diego Simeone-led side contemplate snapping up the Tottenham skipper, they have one big concern.

As per the Marca report, “The major problem, in this case, is that Manchester United is another club that has the Argentine on its radar.”

Atleti’s anxiety, if anything, should serve as motivation for United; this is a deal they can wrap up if they truly mean business.

Premier League proven

Much like the Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha deals, Romero is a quality player and has already proven himself in the Premier League. On his best days, the World Cup winner ranks among the finest centre-backs in the league.

He would be a massive hit at Old Trafford. His leadership, front-footed defending, and ball-playing ability could raise the level of United’s backline considerably and help the 20-time English champions compete on multiple fronts.
