Cristiano Ronaldo is reportedly set to announce his retirement from international football after one final Portugal appearance, expected against Wales in the Nations League on 24 September at Jose Alvalade.

The long-debated question over his Portugal future now appears to have a target date, with claims he plans to step aside after that fixture in Lisbon.

The timing aligns with new head coach Jorge Jesus, appointed on a four-year deal, who has vowed against sweeping changes. “People might think that the new manager is going to come in and change a lot of players. That won't happen. I'm not stupid. On top of that, I don't have enough time to bring in several players who weren't called up this time”, he said, speaking to Canal 11.

If he bows out after facing Wales, Ronaldo would close an international career of unprecedented scale, with 233 appearances and 146 goals, making him the most capped player and the top scorer in international football history.

His Portugal honours include the European Championship in 2016 and two UEFA Nations League titles in 2019 and 2025.

Now 41, Ronaldo remains under contract at Al Nassr until the summer of 2027. He is on 976 career goals and aims to reach 1000 before retiring completely, with club football set to command his full focus once Portugal duties end.
