Cruz Azul, Tigres UANL play for a spot in Champions Cup Final

MIAMI – The 2025 Concacaf Champions Cup continues Thursday with Cruz Azul hosting Tigres UANL in the second leg of their semifinal series at Estadio Olímpico Universitario in Mexico City, Mexico.
Cruz Azul seeks to defend its advantage on away goals after a 1-1 draw in the opening encounter. Carlos Rotondi opened the scoring for the visitors before Juan Purata equalized for Tigres UANL.
La Máquina will play at home in the second leg of the CCC semifinals for an eighth time. In the previous seven occasions, Cruz Azul has advanced four times, most recently in the 2013/14 campaign.
The six-time champions will look to the likes of attacker Ángel Sepúlveda to win the series. Sepúlveda leads the tournament with eight goal contributions, six goals and two assists.
Tigres UANL has a mixed record closing out series on the road with two qualifications, vs. Vancouver Whitecaps in 2016/17 and Santos Laguna in 2019, and two eliminations, CD FAS in 1979 and Club León in 2023.
This was the third first-leg semifinal draw for Los Felinos in Champions Cup history. They previously advanced in 2015/16 after a nil-nil draw at Querétaro and were eliminated in 1979 following a nil-nil draw at home to CD FAS.
The winner on aggregate will advance to the final. Away goals serve as the primary tiebreaker. If necessary, extra time and a penalty shootout will decide a winner.
The winner of the series will advance secure a spot in the Concacaf Champions Cup Final to face either Inter Miami CF or Vancouver Whitecaps FC.
