Crystal Palace have made a decision on manager Oliver Glasner following his outburst in the aftermath of a 2-1 defeat to Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.
According to Sky Sports, the Palace board want to stick with Glasner until the end of the season when his contract runs out, but they’re not particularly happy about his comments.
The Austrian coach was clearly emotional following another damaging result and a week that has pushed the club deeper into turbulence and hurt their chances of qualifying for Europe.
Palace took the lead on the half-hour mark through Yeremy Pino, but the Black Cats responded just three minutes later through Enzo Le Fee.
The Eagles were then put to the sword by a late goal from Brian Brobbey, marking their 10th game without a win across all competitions.
The defeat to Sunderland also came just days after a humiliating FA Cup exit to non-League Macclesfield in the third round of the tournament.
There has been plenty of speculation surrounding the futures of several Palace stars since the start of the winter transfer window.
However, the timing of Marc Guehi’s imminent move to Manchester City proved to be the breaking point for Glasner, as the deal was agreed shortly before the Sunderland clash.
Glasner criticised the decision to sell the club captain so close to kick-off.
“We feel like we’re being abandoned completely,” Glasner said. “Selling our captain one day before a game – there is no understanding for this.
“We are preparing and then yesterday [Friday], I get told that our captain will be sold, but why not next week? At least he can play this game, and then next week, other players are coming back.
“It makes me really upset. I’ve been in football for 30 years and never experienced this, not once. Now it happens twice in six or seven months. That’s just where we are now.”
While those comments angered Palace chairman Steve Parish, the club are aware of the wider context.
Glasner has already confirmed he will leave Palace at the end of the season when his contract expires, a decision he first communicated to the board back in October.
Palace would prefer that the exit happen calmly and respectfully, rather than ending the relationship early in frustration.
However, they could be forced into a mid-season change if Glasner fails to turn things around in the coming weeks.
