Adam Armstrong's move from Southampton to Wolves could collapse as a result of transfer developments at Crystal Palace.

Adam Armstrong's deadline day move from Southampton to Wolverhampton Wanderers has been thrown into fresh doubt courtesy of transfer developments elsewhere.

Amid the Saints' faint hopes of a play-off push, Wolves had eyed a swoop for Armstrong despite their Premier League struggles.

The striker has notched 11 goals and four assists in 29 Championship appearances for Tonda Eckert's men, who are just 14th in the second tier despite Saturday's 2-0 triumph over Stoke City.

While Armstrong's move to Wolves is in doubt, fellow Saints striker Cameron Archer is set to stay at Southampton, rather than joining Scottish Premiership title challengers Rangers.

Adam Armstrong's move from Southampton to Wolves thrown into doubt as Jean-Philippe Mateta deal collapses

The Southampton forward's potential move to Molineux sat at the bottom of a chain of prospective transfer deals, with AC Milan previously eager for Crystal Palace ace Jean-Philippe Mateta, and the Eagles keen on Wolves striker Jorgen Strand Larsen.

However, as reported by Sky Sports, Mateta's move from South London to the San Siro has collapsed.

Following those developments, Sky football correspondent Rob Dorsett posted on X: "With Mateta to AC Milan now dead, concerns that the striker-chain may collapse.

"At the moment, our sources saying CPFC still want to sign Strand Larsen for £48m from WWFC (has now completed medical) and Wolves still want to replace him with Adam Armstrong from Saints. But…."

Southampton supporters would be delighted if Adam Armstrong stays with Championship club

Southampton's board are willing to facilitate Armstrong's exit with just hours remaining until the winter transfer window closes.

The Saints' Championship season has been littered with inconsistency, throwing serious doubt over whether the Hampshire club are capable of making an immediate Premier League return via the play-offs.

Remarkably, Eckert's side have not earned consecutive league wins since their back-to-back wins over Birmingham City and West Bromwich Albion in early February, so it is clear to see where their problems lie.

Meanwhile, Armstrong showed how good he can be by notching 24 goals and 13 assists when his side won promotion to the top flight in a successful 2023/24 season.

The striker has also been a shining light for Eckert's side in the second tier this term, once again proving how dangerous he is in front of goal in the Championship.

Thanks to the congested nature of the second tier, Southampton remain seven points adrift of the play-offs even though they are in the bottom half, but bridging that gap without Armstrong would be tough.

Therefore, the St Mary's faithful, who will be eager for their side to make a play-off push, will be pleased if the 28-year-old's move to Wolves falls through.
