Daichi Kamada is set to miss at least eight to 10 weeks with a serious hamstring injury, Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner said.
He limped off after a challenge in Sunday’s 3-0 defeat by Manchester City.
His absence further depletes Palace, with right wing-back Daniel Munoz facing at least another month out after knee surgery and No 10 Ismaila Sarr away with Senegal at the Africa Cup of Nations.
Several academy players are expected to start Thursday’s UEFA Conference League tie with Kuopion Palloseura to protect senior players. Two completely different starting XIs are planned for that match and the trip to Leeds United 48 hours later.
Kamada’s lay-off squeezes midfield options to Will Hughes, Adam Wharton and Jefferson Lerma. Justin Devenny can fill in but is typically used as a No 10.
With Kamada also operating there at times, Romain Esse and Christantus Uche could see more minutes, but the 29-year-old has been a key presence in a deeper role. With his contract up in the summer, no decision has been made on Glasner’s future. Palace have only 16 senior outfield players available and will add Under-21s. Long-term absentees Cheick Doucoure, Chadi Riad, Rio Cardines and Caleb Kporha remain sidelined, and Riad will step back to the Under-21s for more intensive work.
