Santos have begun their search after dismissing Juan Pablo Vojvoda, with Cuca emerging as Marcelo Teixeira’s preferred choice. According to Diario Do Peixe, Alexandre Mattos is also in favour of him.
There is no consensus on Cuca inside the club, with opposition due to a 1987 case in Switzerland in which he and others were accused of sexual assault against a minor. He was convicted in absentia in 1989, a verdict annulled by Swiss courts in 2024 for procedural reasons, without reviewing the merits.
Separately, Mattos’s position is also being debated. Despite backing from the president and his involvement in football decisions, he faces internal resistance, with some directors pushing for broader changes and for his exit.
Amid this, board members sounded out former coach Emerson Leão, now retired, about taking an executive role at the club. The approach came from directors rather than the presidency.
Other names discussed include Marcelo Gallardo and Tite, though both are viewed as more complicated hires. Gallardo has paused his career and plans to work only after June, while Tite’s past friction with Gabigol weighs in the assessment.
Cuca has previously coached Santos three times and also played for the club. A decision is expected at Vila Belmiro within hours. After the defeat to Internacional, no director addressed Vojvoda’s exit, which was announced by a communications staffer.
