Cuca hails Caballero cameo and insists he will not drop the forward | OneFootball

Cuca praised Gustavo Caballero’s second half cameo in Santos’s 0-0 draw with Remo at Vila Belmiro in the Copa do Brasil last 16 first leg, and said he would not dispense with the forward.

According to Diario Do Peixe, the coach said the Paraguayan gave the depth Santos wanted on the right as Remo dropped deep, accepting that a mis-hit cross happens, and noted Menino had one too.

He called Caballero important and underlined that he will not give up the players he has.

This was Caballero’s second outing since returning. The number 17 also came on in the 2-2 draw with Chapecoense in the Brasileirão at Vila last Saturday. Before his loan to the English second tier, he featured in the league opener against Chapecoense and in the Paulista against Novorizontino.

Signed in July last year from Nacional, he is contracted until 23 July 2027. He was courted by Vitória de Guimarães and Paris FC, with interest from Vasco, and the chance to play alongside Neymar weighed. Last season he made 12 Brasileirão appearances, scoring one and assisting one.

In total he has 16 games, one goal and one assist for Santos. Born in San Lorenzo, he turns 25 in September after spells with Deportivo Capiatá and Sportivo Ameliano before Nacional. For Paraguay, he came on in the second half as they advanced past Germany in the second phase, then again in the round of 16 defeat to France at the World Cup.
