Les Elephants need a win to confirm their progression
World Cup Group E will wrap up this evening as Curacao face the Ivory Coast in Philadelphia, with both sides still able to qualify for the round of 32. Emerse Fae’s men have won one and lost one so far, edging Ecuador in their first match of the summer before falling at the hands of Germany, by way of a late Denis Undav-inspired comeback. Curacao, meanwhile, were hit for seven by Julian Nagelsmann’s Mannschaft, but a goalless draw with Ecuador means they remain in contention to progress.
As things stand, Dick Advocaat’s men could become the only debutant at this World Cup to reach the round of 32, in what would be a colossal achievement for a nation of just 158,000 people. They will need another shock result here, though. Only three points will be enough to see them through to the next stage, though, while a draw will see them eliminated.
The progression permutations will, of course, hinge on the result of Ecuador vs Germany, which will take place simultaneously, up the road in New York.
