Curacao are set to take on Ivory Coast in their final group-stage match on Thursday at Philadelphia Stadium, with both sides still in contention for qualification.
The situation in the group makes this a decisive contest. Curaçao have collected just one point so far, while Ivory Coast sit slightly ahead with three points. As a result, the outcome of this match will play a key role in determining which team progresses to the next round.
Curaçao’s journey has been far from easy, though there have been signs of improvement. In the lead-up to the World Cup, they struggled badly in friendly matches, suffering heavy defeats against China, Australia, and Scotland. Their opening game in the tournament was also difficult, as they were beaten 7-1 by Germany. However, they responded impressively in their most recent fixture, earning a historic 0-0 draw against Ecuador and securing their first-ever World Cup point.
There are a few minor selection issues for Curaçao as they aim to build on that positive result under manager Dick Advocaat. Experienced striker Jurgen Locadia is dealing with a slight injury concern and may not start, which could lead to a change in attack or provide an opportunity for Gervane Kastaneer to come into the lineup.
At the same time, Middlesbrough winger Sontje Hansen is likely to remain among the substitutes. He has struggled to reclaim his place in the starting eleven since being taken off at half-time during the opening defeat against Germany.
Defensively, Curaçao are expected to stick with their disciplined 5-4-1 system. The structure is led by veteran goalkeeper Eloy Room, who delivered an outstanding performance against Ecuador, making an incredible 15 saves.
Midfielders Tahith Chong and Leandro Bacuna will play important roles in maintaining control and balance in the game.
Possible Curacao starting XI: Room; Brenet, Gaari, Obispo, Floranus, Fonville; Chong, Comenencia, L. Bacuna, J. Bacuna; Locadia
The match will kick off at 9pm BST on Thursday, 25th June.
UK fans can watch the match live on BBC Two.
