In the shadow of Harry Kane, a completely unexpected name is causing a stir in German professional soccer. While the Bayern star is dominating the Bundesliga at will, a player who hardly anyone had on their radar before the season has shot to the top of the scoring charts in the second division: Mateusz Zukowski

Who is Germany’s top goalscorer? Many fans are likely to answer this question very clearly with Harry Kane, but very few will have noticed that Mateusz Zukowski from second-division club 1. FC Magdeburg follows behind the Englishman

The 24-year-old is having a season that is hard to explain. In 18 games, the Pole has scored 17 goals – an average of one goal every 93 minutes. This means he is only surpassed in the three German professional leagues by Kane, who scores 65 minutes per goal. Even established Bundesliga strikers such as Deniz Undav cannot keep up with this level of efficiency

From defender to goalscorer

The really remarkable thing about Zukowski’s rise, however, is his past. The Magdeburg native was not signed as a striker last summer, but as a right-back – and even with an injury. FCM struck for just €250,000 shortly before the transfer deadline, although the player had previously suffered a broken metatarsal and missed the first eight games of the season

At this point, his CV pointed to many things – but not to a career as a goalscorer. Zukowski had previously scored just five goals in 132 professional games. Stints at Glasgow Rangers, Lech Poznan and Śląsk Wrocław failed to produce a lasting breakthrough, and he was often only used as a substitute

One training session changes everything

The turning point only came in Magdeburg – and in an inconspicuous training session of all places. After his comeback, Zukowski was tested in the final training session and suddenly a completely new picture emerged. His shots were so precise and powerful that coach Petrik Sander decided without further ado to no longer use him in defence, but in the center of attack

Since then, Zukowski has almost single-handedly carried the offense of a relegation-threatened team, scoring over 35 percent of Magdeburg’s goals and providing three assists

His story is not only one of the biggest surprises of the season, but also an example of how unpredictable soccer can be. A player who for years was considered a defensive winger suddenly develops into one of the most efficient goal scorers in German professional soccer

And while Harry Kane continues to make his mark at the top, Zukowski is creating a fairytale of his own a league below – one that shows that sometimes just one moment, one training session or one courageous decision is enough to completely change a career.
