Saints striker Cyle Larin has returned to Southampton training after an extended break following the World Cup with Canada.
Head coach Tonda Eckert told Daily Echo last month: "Let's see for the Carabao Cup how many minutes he can do," adding, "But definitely [the aim is] to be there against Watford."
The tie is at Colchester United this weekend, and the Championship opener follows at Watford next weekend.
Larin scored twice for Canada in front of home supporters in Toronto and Vancouver as they reached the round of 16.
The 31-year-old completed a permanent move to Saints before departing, after an impressive loan from Mallorca in the second half of last season.
He hit eight goals and one assist in 16 Championship outings to lift Eckert's side into the play-offs, and also netted against Leicester City in a 2-1 FA Cup win. He has signed a two-year contract at St Mary's, with an option for a further year.
