Dani Alves has drawn attention after saying he felt happier earning 113 euros in prison than when he made millions from football.

According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, the former Brazilian footballer was accused of sexual assault over an incident on 30 December 2022 in a Barcelona nightclub and spent more than a year in pre-trial detention. He now shares religious messages as a Christian preacher.

Speaking at a conference, he contrasted life behind bars with his playing days. He said he once earned millions thanks to God and football, but in prison, on 113 euros and cleaning, he felt greater happiness. He added that having his Father with him led him to question the worth of wealth without God.

His remarks spread quickly on social media, prompting mixed reactions. Some users highlighted his spiritual shift, while others criticised his description of prison given the legal process he faced.

Since regaining his freedom, Alves has moved away from the pitch towards religion, using public appearances and social channels to share messages of faith and lessons he says came from hardship.

He now takes part in religious settings, recounting his experiences and outlining his view of spirituality.
