Daniel Juan became the unlikely face of FC Barcelona’s presidential race after arriving at the Auditori 1899 to file 84 supporting signatures, far short of the 2,337 required, according to Superdeporte.
The 39-year-old from la Bisbal d’Empordà turned up without fanfare in an Opel Zafira and carried a single box, in stark contrast to rivals unloading multiple crates.
An administrative assistant by trade, Juan has been member number 70.761 since November 2006. He backed Joan Laporta in the last election, but says his vote will go elsewhere on 15 March.
He said he had long wanted to stand, acknowledged his campaign had very limited resources and thanked those who supported him, as told to Jijantes. He also said there are things he believes are not being done well, speaking to Mundo Deportivo.
Juan frames his bid as modest in means and aimed at changing aspects of the club’s management. He has questioned the clarity of certain decisions, the removal of the singing section and information around the timeline for returning to the Camp Nou.
He has lived major nights as a supporter, attending the Champions League finals won in 2011 at Wembley against Manchester United and in 2015 in Berlin against Juventus, along with several Copa del Rey finals.
