The Hammers are seeing plenty of star names linked with moves away from the club

West Ham United's relegation from the Premier League to the Championship has, unsurprisingly, come at a huge financial cost for the club.

The Hammers have not played in the EFL for the past 14 years, and during that timeframe, after consolidating back in the top-flight, moved to the London Stadium in the summer of 2016, and even achieved UEFA Conference League glory as recently as three summers ago.

However, in more recent times, the East London outfit have certainly been on a downward curve and gone through a number of head coaches, with Nuno Espírito Santo currently the man overseeing matters from the dugout.

West Ham's campaign in the Premier League last term got off to the worst possible start under Graham Potter - who is now in charge of Sweden at the FIFA World Cup 2026 - before the Portuguese was appointed as his replacement in September.

Despite a relative upturn in results, the Irons were unable to come out successfully from their relegation dogfight against local rivals, Tottenham Hotspur, although their points total of 39 was still the highest any relegated side has racked up in the top-flight for 15 years.

They still boast several impressive names as part of the squad officially heading into the Championship campaign, although the jury is still largely out on how many of those Nuno will be able to retain.

However, in recent days, there has certainly been some positive sounds from Czech investor, Daniel Křetínský, and another has reportedly dropped on the transfer front which could please the masses.

Indeed, it has been widely reported that the club must generate far in excess of £100m to help balance their financial books after relegation, with speculation already rife over several players.

At the very top of said list sits the highly-rated Portuguese midfielder, Mateus Fernandes, who has still enjoyed an impressive individual campaign with three goals and four assists after moving from Southampton last August for a reported £38m, which included a 15% sell-on clause for the Hampshire outfit.

Fernandes, 21, has been heavily linked with moves to Arsenal, Tottenham, Manchester United and UEFA Champions League holders, Paris Saint-Germain, with West Ham reportedly demanding approximately £80m for a sale.

However, it was also recently claimed that the second tier side are in no rush to agree a sale, while Dutch winger, Crysencio Summerville has also become the subject of interest from the Red Devils and Les Parisiens.

Bowen has also received plenty of attention, with it being claimed that the club captain is the only player who will not receive a 50% drop in wages after relegation.

However, as per a report from Claret and Hugh, it has been revealed that board member, Jiri Svarc, on behalf of the aforementioned Kretinsky, sent out an email to key players that they will be retained by their current employers.

The publication also claim that they have been informed by an agent of an unnamed player that "everyone is (staying)," which will certainly increase positivity levels at the London Stadium.

Unsurprisingly, the fresh update has generated plenty of mixed responses from Hammers supporters, with the club already hot favourites to win the Championship title when assessing their squad on paper.

With the fact that the club seemingly need to generate a nine-figure sum, some have already outlined who they would be looking to offload.

Unsurprisingly, many would love to see the likes of Fernandes stay put, but the chances of such feats occurring could still feel impossible.

Another is of the firm opinion that, regardless of transfer activity, an experienced squad should be assembled by Nuno.

And, whilst the aforementioned sums touted in reports involving Fernandes and Summerville in particular, are quite high, another supporter believes that Kretinsky is taking the right approach from a financial perspective.

West Ham would send out a statement if high-profile players are retained

With Nuno in charge, many at the London Stadium will be hoping the 52-year-old can replicate his Championship title win with Wolverhampton Wanderers back in 2017/18, which was also achieved through the assembling of a star-studded team at Molineux.

West Ham, of course, are in a similar boat at this moment in time despite the contrasting circumstances, and it would certainly be a huge statement if they were able to retain the likes of Fernandes and Summerville amongst others.
